Nemausus

deity earth Gallo-Roman single tradition · 1

Nemausus was the local patron god of the Gallic oppidum of Nemausus, the hill-fort later refounded as a colonia under Roman rule, now Nîmes, France. He seems to have served both as the source personified and therefore the provider of life-giving water, and as its defender. An inscription of the 2nd–3rd century CE places Nemausus next to an instantiation of Jupiter and endows him with Mars-like attributes.
