Puti Zushi is a magical Taoist martial artist and immortal who resides in a temple in the forest. He initially refuses to accept the Monkey King as a student but is impressed by his persistence in waiting outside the entrance for months and eventually allows him to enter. He gives the Monkey King the religious name Sun Wukong and teaches him many advanced Taoist practices including the Way of Immortality, while forbidding him from ever revealing his master's identity.
