novensiles
ancestor underworld Roman single tradition · 1
The novensiles are invoked in a prayer formula preserved by Livy, uttered during the Samnite Wars as part of a devotio sacrifice to infernal gods. They are described by Servius as "old gods" who earned numinous status through their virtus (quality of character), and are regarded by ancient authorities as mortals who became gods. Like the Lares and Manes, they may be concerned with the subterranean world where ancestors were sleeping.
