Mũmbi is the ancestral mother of the Gĩkũyũ people, brought together with Gĩkũyũ by the deity Ngai. She is part of the foundational ancestral couple from whom the Gĩkũyũ community originates. Together with Gĩkũyũ, she is the parent of nine daughters who became the eponymous ancestors of the nine principal Gĩkũyũ clans.
