Akilandeswari is a form of Parvati who was directed by Shiva to perform penance on Earth after she mocked his penance. She conducted her penance in the Jambu forest, creating a lingam from Kaveri river water under the Venn Naaval tree and worshipping it. After Shiva appeared and taught her Shiva Gnana, she received spiritual lessons facing East while Shiva stood facing West.
