Urutonga is the mother of Tāwhaki and Karihi who was captured and enslaved by the Ponaturi along with Hemā. She helped her sons rescue her by informing them that light is fatal to the Ponaturi. She assisted in tricking the Ponaturi by reassuring them that dawn was still far off before the attack.
