Tǔdìpó

deity earth Chinese single tradition · 1

Tǔdìpó, meaning "Grandmother of the Soil and the Ground," are wives given to Tudigong in countryside worship, placed next to them on altars. They may be seen as just and benevolent deities on the same rank as their husbands, or as grudging old women holding back their husband's benedictions, which explains why one does not always receive fair retribution for good behavior. According to another story, Tudipo was originally a young lady who was going to be killed though not guilty, and was brought to heaven by the Jade Emperor to become Tudigong's wife and oversee his distribution of blessings.
