Tenjin is a deified ancestor who was Sugawara no Michizane (845–903 CE) in life. He is worshipped as a kami not because of godly powers, but because of a distinctive quality or virtue. Tenjin is celebrated regionally with miniature shrines (hokora) built in his honor.
