St. Pius V was a 16th-century pope of the Catholic Church who issued the papal bull Regnans in Excelsis, excommunicating Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1570. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church for his role in the Counter-Reformation and his efforts to uphold Catholic doctrine. Known for his strict orthodoxy and pastoral zeal, he was canonized in 1712.
