St. Meinrad was a monk who founded a hermitage on Mt. Etzel and brought with him a wonderworking statue of Our Lady. He was martyred in 861 by robbers, and his sanctity inspired a succession of hermits who lived at the site for eighty years. He is venerated as a patron saint of the Abbey of Einsiedeln.
