St. Birinus was a Frankish bishop who became the first bishop of Dorchester in Anglo-Saxon England. He was sent by Pope Honorius in 634 AD to convert the people of Mercia and Wessex to Christianity. He is venerated as a saint and is considered the apostle of Wessex.
