St. Bartholomew is a Christian martyr and apostle who was flayed alive during his martyrdom. He is the most prominent flayed Christian martyr and is commonly depicted in art holding his flayed skin and the knife used to skin him. He serves as the patron saint of tanners, plasterers, tailors, leatherworkers, bookbinders, farmers, housepainters, butchers, and glove makers.
