Sosondowah

deity sky Iroquois single tradition · 1

Sosondowah was a greatly skilled hunter who was captured by Dawn when he pursued a Sky-Elk into the heavens and was commanded to guard the door of her lodge for eternity. He fell in love with Gendenwitha and repeatedly escaped from Dawn by entering the hearts of different birds to visit her. Dawn punished his defiance by transforming Gendenwitha into a star and placing her on his forehead so he must long for her throughout all time without attaining her.
