Semiramis (Shamiram in Armenian) was a sorceress who fell in love with the Armenian king Ara. When Ara refused to marry her, Semiramis waged war against Armenia, resulting in Ara's death. She prayed to the gods (the arlezes) to raise Ara from the dead and disguised one of her lovers as Ara to convince the Armenians not to continue the war.
