Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Catholic priest and theologian who founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with six companions. He became its first Superior General in Paris in 1541. He was beatified in 1609 and canonized as a saint on 12 March 1622.
