Preah Thorani

deity earth Buddhist single tradition · 1

Preah Thorani is the earth deity personified as a beautiful young woman who rose from underneath the Bodhi Tree throne to witness the Bodhisattva's right to enlightenment. She twisted her long hair to release torrents of water collected from innumerable donative libations over the ages, creating a flood that washed away Mara and his army. In Buddhism, she is categorized as a Bhummatthika Devata (Earth Dwelling Deva) and in modern terms as a Bhuta, a coarse, primal, or non-heavenly Deva.
