Philidel
single tradition · 1
According to Curtis Price, in Dryden's opera Philidel represents the Marquess of Halifax, a political moderate much admired by Dryden. The opera was probably an allegory of the Exclusion crisis, a major political dispute over who would succeed Charles II. Dryden was a convinced Tory.
