Mahasarasvati, also known as Kaushiki, was created by Mahalakshmi from her pure Sattva nature. She in turn created a male-female pair which included the goddess Gauri. She is later incarnated as an eight-armed goddess who destroys the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha.
