Landøyðan
deity intermediate Norse single tradition · 1
Landøyðan, meaning "Land-waster", was a prophetic banner standard of Harald Hardrada that was believed to grant victory to whoever bore it in battle. It was prophesied that victory would be his before whom this banner was borne, and Harald claimed this had been the case ever since he obtained it. The banner's magic ultimately failed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, where Harald was killed and his army slaughtered despite fierce fighting to protect the standard.
