Inugami is the spirit of a dog that causes spiritual possession, widely known in western Japan. The belief in inugami is firmly rooted in eastern Ōita Prefecture, Shimane Prefecture, and parts of Kōchi Prefecture in northern Shikoku. It is theorized that Shikoku, where no foxes could be found, serves as the main base of the inugami.
