Ibini Ukpabi

deity intermediate Aro Confederacy single tradition · 1

Ibini Ukpabi, meaning 'Drum of the Creator God' in Ibibio, was an oracle of the Aro Confederacy in Southeastern Nigeria, known among the British as the 'Long Ju-ju'. The oracle was used to settle cases of murder, witchcraft, poisoning, and family disputes, and was paramount throughout the Niger Delta. Communities believed that the oracle devoured those who visited it and did not return, though in practice the priests sold losing parties into slavery.
