Iambe is a maiden figure in Greek myth who, according to tradition, drew the first smile from the mourning goddess Demeter. She is credited with originating the iambic metre through her licensed raillery at Demeter's festivals. Her laughter is said to have alleviated divine grief and inspired satirical poetry.
