The haugbonde is said to be the ghost of the first inhabitant of the farmstead, the one who cleared the tomt (house lot). After death, this first settler becomes the guardian spirit of the farmstead. The haugbonde is a mound-dwelling spirit closely connected to, though not completely identical with, the tomte/nisse tradition.
