The Proto-Indo-European earth deity, perceived as a vast, flat and circular continent surrounded by waters. She was referred to as the 'All-Bearing One' who bears all things and creatures, and was also called 'much-nourishing' or 'rich-pastured' in ritual expressions. The commonest epithet applied to her was *pl̥th₂éwih₂ meaning the 'Broad One'.
