Chalchiutlicue was the guardian of children and newborns in Aztec tradition. She was invoked by healers practicing hydromancy to find the tonalli (spirits) of sick children and played a central role in childbirth. She was also called the god of the sea and her divine water was believed to wash away impurity, misfortune, and protect life.
