Banji
ancestor mountain matagi single tradition · 1
Banji is the elder of two brothers who lived on Banji-iwa (Banji's Rock) overlooking Futakuchi Canyon in Mutsu Province. He showed kindness to a pregnant woman seeking shelter, taking her in and caring for her despite the matagi code considering childbirth unclean. After the woman revealed herself as a mountain spirit and taught him a hunter's prayer, Banji always had more success on his hunts than his brother.
