Ananias (Hananyo) was educated and ordained as a monk at the Monastery of Mor Mattai near Mosul. He was later ordained as the metropolitan bishop of Mardin and Kafartut, undertaking major restoration of the monastery. He also established a grand library of manuscripts, and under his leadership, the monastic community grew to about 80 monks.
