Saint Agatha is a Christian martyr venerated as the patron saint of Catania, Sicily. She refused the advances of a Roman prefect, endured torture, and died in prison on 5 February 251 CE. Her intercession is credited with protecting Catania from volcanic fires of Mount Etna.
