Abonsam is a malevolent spirit from the Gold Coast region of West Africa and Ghana. When accidents, disease, and other afflictions occur, local shamans may determine that Abonsam is responsible. The spirit is driven into the sea through an elaborate ritual involving four weeks of silence, removal of furniture, and the creation of loud noises through beating sticks, shouting, and gunfire.
